About the Research Team

  • Dr. Craig Jennex

    Craig Jennex is the Primary Investigator for this project. He is an Associate Professor of English at Toronto Metropolitan University and a scholar of LGBTQ2+ culture and politics, queer and feminist theory, and popular music studies. He is co-author (with Nisha Eswaran) of Out North: An Archive of Queer Activism and Kinship in Canada and co-editor (with Susan Fast) of Popular Music and the Politics of Hope: Queer and Feminist Interventions.

  • Afrah Idrees

    Afrah works as the visual design lead on this project. She conducted a visual analysis of the handbills from the GCDC dances, created website formatting, and developed the branding and design of Liberation on the Dance Floor.

  • Cristal Gillette

    Cristal began working on this project in 2022. She has conducted archival research, developed detailed literature reviews, and is currently working on a detailed study of Blockorama.

  • Dr. Meredith Evans

    Meredith assisted with the management and administration of this project from 2020-2022. Her work included supervising RAs; co-facilitating interviews with GCDC organizers, DJs, and participants; indexing, coding, and analyzing archival and qualitative data; writing; and editing.

  • Rachel Gopal

    Rachel worked as an RA on this project from 2020-2021. She transcribed interviews and conducted archival research on newspaper articles as well as on the groups and organizations that participated in the GCDC.

  • Isobel Carnegie

    Isobel worked as an RA on this project from 2020-2021. She analyzed archival materials related to the GCDC held at The ArQuives, including meeting minutes, oral histories, and issues of Xtra! from the 1980s and 1990s.

  • Ross Hutchison

    Ross worked as an RA on this project in 2021-2022. With the support of an Undergraduate Research Opportunity grant from the Faculty of Arts at TMU, Ross created the HistoryPin map of important historical dance spaces in Toronto in the 20th century. He also analyzed historical music charts and created YouTube playlists.

  • Rachel Bowman

    Rachel worked as an RA on this project from 2020-2021. She analyzed archival materials related to the GCDC held at The ArQuives, including meeting minutes, surveys, and ephemera. Rachel also analyzed and coded GCDC promotional materials and researched the organizations that participated in the GCDC.
