In August 1988, GCDC volunteer Dee Paul made a presentation to the Executive to share concerns from the women’s community about the upcoming Jocks and Frocks dance–specifically, about the planned “Best Bodies” contest.

Meeting minutes document that “women expressed concern that the competition may turn into a beauty contest. The vast majority of women are opposed to a best bodies competition. To this end, the executive recommends that the GCDC drop the women’s portion of the Best Bodies competition.” At this same meeting, organisers recommended that the GCDC form a sub-committee on women’s issues, chaired by Dee Paul.

Xtra! magazine reported incorrectly that the women’s Best Body contest was cancelled because there was only one entry. They subsequently issued a correction to clarify that the mixed contest was cancelled because there was only one entry; the women’s contest had multiple entries but was cancelled due to objections from the women’s community.
