As a way of honouring the volunteers who made the dances possible, the GCDC developed a “Merit Card Policy'' in 1989. There were two types of merit cards. A Gold Card could be “awarded to a person who has demonstrated outstanding service, over and above the normal expectations of GCDC participation, over an extended period of time of no less than two years.” The GCDC’s Gold Card would allow the holder and one guest free admission to all of the GCDC’s events. A Silver Card could be awarded to a person who has demonstrated outstanding service for “no less than one year.” This card enabled the holder to attend GCDC events for free for life.

GCDC participants could confidentially nominate their fellow volunteers for merit cards, submitted in writing to the GCDC’s Volunteer Coordinator who  would convene an Awards Committee to adjudicate the merit card award process in June of each year. The Awards Committee was chaired by the Volunteer Coordinator and included three general members and three members of the Executive Committee.
